Who we are

The organization with support of Bread for the World has implemented grassroots based interventions with an increasing demand to expand its services across the country. GCDI has been working in Nyakach, Rachuonyo North and Bondo sub-counties and expanded its scope to include Gem Sub-county in Siaya.

The activities

  • Provision of safety nets for widows and widowers on entrepreneur-ship, IGA and agribusiness.
  • Sensitization for girls in community and schools on menstrual hygiene, and provision of Hygiene and Dignity Kits to vulnerable Girls.
  • Promotion and implementation of the school re-entry policy.
  • Training and engagement of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) Peer Mentors.
  • Creation and/or strengthening community safe spaces as Service delivery points.
  • Edutainment Sports for Health to mobilize the youth.
  • Conduct Integrated HIV Testing Outreaches and Community HIV Campaigns.
  • Formation and strengthening of Community Systems for Behavior Change.
  • Provide Covid-19 Safety and Mitigation.

Activities supported by Aplerbeck World Group

  • Training of participants as multipliers on HIV/AIDS : Workshops with young people, teachers and widows, as well as church leaders on Peer Education training

  • Development and support of Health clubs in schools and establishment of youth groups.
  • Support to two widows' support groups under the umbrella of “GENO, Support to those Living with HIV/Aids”
  • Widows, widow inheritors, fisher folks and youth HIV/AIDS Mitigation programmes: Training and sensitization on HIV/Aids as well as distribution of moringa powder as a natural supplement to boost the immunity.

  • Support to World Aids Day Commemoration events: Annual arrangement of and support to World AIDS Day commemoration as a public event in different areas of the province
  • Malaria campaign: Distribution of mosquito nets to children under 5 yrs and pregnant women;The cultivation and use of Artemesia as a supportive treatment for Malaria
  • Access to clean drinking water - "Every drop counts" project: Joint project on "Rain Water Harvesting" with the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the city of Dortmund, the IZ3W Dortmund and the Weltgruppe Aplerbeck; provision of Tanks for Rainwater harvesting in schools, church buildings and at widows' houses in the Siaya, Kisumu and Homabay Counties

  • Drilling of borehole at the Nyakach center and provision of decent improved ventilated latrines to schools with the support from Willow Foundation.
  • Empowerment of girls and widows with income generating activities: Support to own initiatives like goat rearing, catering and Promotion of saving culture through table banking savings and loan programmes

  • Disaster Management: Rapid response to disaster and humanitarian support; distribution of emergency supplies and enhancement of community coping mechanisms
